MPs fail to pay rent

Members of Parliment are said to have accumulated rental arrears of P178,000 at the Parliamentary Village flats for an unspecified period. The figure includes arrears by former MPs who stayed at the flats.

The Auditor-General report for the year ending March 31, 2008 found that there is no indication that the defaulters are being vigorously followed to pay up. The report says that MPs have accumulated P91,703 in arrears for electricity.

The existing arrangement for the settlement of electricity charges at the Parliamentary Village is that government pays Botswana Power Corporation then recovers the amount from MPs. "Members reimburse a portion of the bill calculated at 24 thebe per unit for electricity consumed in the individual member's flat," the report says.
