Efforts by a delegation from Parliament to end the civil service strike failed yesterday after the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) refused to back down on the issue of dismissed workers.

The Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSU) spokesman, Goretetse Kekgonegile said that the agreement drafted by the delegation has fallen through because DPSM refused to budge. "We were willing to withdraw, bend or compromise as much as we can for the dismissed workers to be reinstated. Government has stated that it will only accommodate the dismissed workers if they re-apply for their jobs and we as the unions are saying we are better off fighting a case of unfair dismissal at the High Court which we are filing soon," he explained.

He stated that they will be appealing all the judgements from the Industrial Court handed down by Justice Tebogo Maruping. "We are escalating the magnitude of the strike as of today (Monday). We will be going around the country mobilising our members and also escalating the picketing. We will choose a team of people who will be picketing in all the branches around the country to remove the workers who are at work from the work places," he said.
