MPs call for durable roads

Members of Parliament (MPs) have called for roads that are more durable instead of the ones that will be redone after a year of commissioning.

MP for Kgatleng West Rakwadi Modipane said that last year's heavy rains exposed the state of roads in the country. "Those rains washed away the roads, leaving many potholes in almost all the roads. It just went to show how poor our roads are," Modipane said. He indicated that the vast sums of money continually spent on maintaining roads was a sign that they had been poorly constructed.

On other issues, Slumber Tsogwane, the MP for Boteti North, said that it is time that tollgates were introduced as they have been in the pipeline for a long time.
Gaborone Central MP, Dumelang Saleshando, expressed his worries over Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), saying the role of citizen entrepreneurs is not catered for. He also stated that the Central Transport Organisation (CTO) has been subjected to numerous studies with the intention of turning it around and increasing efficiency, but to no avail.
"What the government needs is provision of transport, not to invest in fancy vehicles," he said, adding that allowing ministries to buy their own vehicles would be a viable option.
