MP fights Subsidy

The Member of Parliament(MP) for South East North, Odirile Motlhale has presented a motion in Parliament for the introduction of a Youth Wage Subsidy Scheme.

The scheme is meant to address the problem of lack of skills among the youth and to provide an incentive for the private sector to employ young people so that they can develop work skills.  "The incentive for private companies would be  in the form of paying part of the wages for youth they employ," Motlhale explained.

Currently, government implementing the Graduate Internship  Programme (GIP), which caters for youth with diplomas in areas like Information Technology (IT) and degrees. The MP expressed concern about the fate of youth who do not fall under the two categories. According to figures he presented in Parliament, there are approximately 2,800 graduates enrolled under GIP, while 5,000 are on the waiting list.
