MP faults globalisation in breakdown of social systems

Maun West MP Ronald Ridge has said globalisation of culture and economy has adversely affected the social systems that took care of the disadvantaged in society. Speaking at a fundraising dinner organised by Botshabelo ward Village Development Committee (VDC) at Riley Hotel, the MP said globalisation has swallowed the social obligation of communities where the needy were taken care of through the extended family system.

He asserted that before globalisation of culture and the economy dominated the world, there was no destitute on earth that did not have relatives.

He said that in the past, the disadvantaged were saved from the shame of leading a pauper's life because their needs were always provided for through social support systems, like the extended family.
