Moupo refuses to quit

Botswana National Front (BNF) Otsweletse Moupo has said that he will not resign even though his party was humiliated in the Friday general elections.

At a press conference in Gaborone yesterday, Moupo said that his party's defeat at the polls reflects the fact that the BNF has not been in good shape in the past decade. He attributed the BNF loss to protracted internal strife that has dogged his leadership but he said he will not resign. "Politics is not like private companies where the board members can say because the company is not making profits, you must resign. The people of BNF will decide whom they want at the 2010 July congress. I was elected and will not just resign because a few malcontents are calling for my resignation," he said.

He stated that there is no need for him to resign and neither does he find it dishonorable to stay in office even though he has led the BNF to a disastrous electoral performance. Moupo said the next congress in July 2010 is not far and told those who are impatient to see him go that: "There is nothing we can do for them".
