The Botswana National Front (BNF) president and MP for Gaborone West North, Otsweletse Moupo has urged government to give the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) enough autonomy to do its work efficiently. He said the DPP should operate independently from the Attorney General's (AG) office.

The Leader of the Opposition was commenting on the 2009-2010 budget for the AG's Chambers. He said he has no problems with DPP consulting the AG. But the DPP should be independent and its director should be made an accounting officer, who will budget and speak for the department. Moupo said that the job security of the head of DPP should be guaranteed so that the holder can perform without fear of being fired. "It should be difficult to remove (him or) her from office," he said. He added that government should pay better salaries to lawyers to attract and retain them in the civil service.

Lobatse MP, Nehemiah Modubule, supported Moupo's sentiments on the independence of the DPP. He said he is constantly worried by the manner in which the ruling party runs the country.  Modubule added that the ruling party legislators were against the establishment of DPP when Parliament debated the matter a few years ago.
