The Botswana National Front (BNF) Member of Parliament for Kgalagadi North, Obakeng Moumakwa, will not stand for the 2009 general elections. BNF Publicity Secretary, Moeti Mohwasa, confirmed this to the Monitor over the weekend. "The president has already briefed the Central Committee on the matter," Mohwasa said.

"Apparently, Moumaka spoke to the president about three months ago. I think this was proper as he acknowledged the leader of the party who is also the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly."

But Mohwasa could not be drawn into disclosing reasons advanced by Moumakwa for deciding not to contest the next general election, saying only that the reasons are personal.
