Motswaledi Verdict: What The People Say

The decision by the Lobatse High Court that President Ian Khama cannot be sued even as Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) president has sent shock waves through some members of the public.

On Friday, the High Court dismissed an application by the BDP secretary general, Gomolemo Motswaledi, challenging his suspension by Khama.  The court cited immunity, noting that no legal action can be taken against the President.

"The more I think of the implications of the Motswaledi judgement, the more it becomes clear to me that no one in Botswana is safe.  Imagine if he (Khama) is to order my detention until further notice.   This means that I can't be released until after 10 years when he leaves office and that's assuming that he will voluntarily leave office.  Did the judges think about the implications of their decision?"
