Motswaledi dodges bout with Khamas

Two months after a bruising BDP congress, Gomolemo Motswaledi says he will not contest the party primary elections as a parliamentary candidate for Serowe North constituency against Vice President Ian Khama's younger brother, Tshekedi Khama.

It is generally believed that Tshekedi was handpicked by his older brother who is expected to take over from the incumbent President, Festus Mogae at the end of his term early 2008.

Speaking from South Africa yesterday, Motswaledi, the BDP's chairman for the Gaborone region, said that he was not ready to state where he will be standing but emphasised that he no longer has any aspirations for the Serowe North constituency. "I can confirm that I am no longer interested in standing for elections at that constituency," he said.
Motswaledi's interest in his hometown constituency did not go down well among a section of the party leadership who accused him of challenging the VP.
