Motlanthe to replace Mbeki

Kgalema Motlanthe is to be sworn in as acting president of South Africa. Lindiwe Sisulu will be acting deputy president.

ANC officials told The Times the decision was taken last night to appoint Motlanthe, who is widely respected across the divided party. His role as a unifier was evidenced at the robust party congress in Polokwane last year. Sisulu was appointed as Housing Minister in Thabo Mbeki's cabinet.
