FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana National Front (BNF) executive committee meeting last Thursday was reportedly divided over the suspension of re-elected Gaborone mayor Harry Mothei. The nominated councillor defied the party to topple Nelson Ramaotwana who succeeded him as mayor in 2004.

Information reaching Mmegi indicates that in the emergency executive committee meeting, party president Otsweletse Moupo was the lonely voice that called for the suspension. The meeting was attended by four of the six executive committee members after deputy secretary general, Mohammed Khan and Kgalagadi North and BNF treasurer, Obakeng Moumakwa sent apologies for failing to pitch up.

It is said that vice president Dr Kathleen Letshabo, secretary general Akanyang Magama and chairman Nehemiah Modubule attended the meeting and opposed Moupo on the suspension. The three are said to have opposed the suspension on principle and told the meeting that there is nothing in the party constitution called a caucus.
