Moswaane becomes BDP's latest 'mokoko'

FRANCISTOWN: Former mayor, Ignatius Moswaane has confirmed that he is standing for the forthcoming general elections as an independent candidate (mekoko).

The Monarch South councillor said at a press conference at Marang Hotel yesterday that he will be in the race despite the fact that he lost in the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) primaries. He likened what is happening in Botswana under President Ian Khama to the goings-on in Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe.

He said paramount chiefs like Khama must distinguish Bogosi from politics, as these are two different fields. "In Bogosi you give orders and they are carried out. But in politics you work together collectively. Everyone has a voice regardless of their status," Moswaane said. He added that his intention is not to drag BDP in the mud or to disrespect Khama but to state the facts that the people have seen unfold before their eyes. "I therefore plead with all my supporters, campaign team and elders to bear with me and rise above all the petty and dirty issues to drive a respectful and humble campaign which will give us all pride," he said. Moswaane said Khama is a good person surrounded by people who give him the wrong advice. This has therefore made him a paranoid oppressor who listens to nobody. "The President now lives in fear and suspicion, looking over his shoulder for bogey men where there are none," he said. "We are advocating for democracy, basic human rights and freedom of speech. Without democracy a human race is demeaned," he said. He added that he was never given a fair hearing in the party.  He said he cannot stand by and watch people's rights being trampled on by those in power.
