Moroka gives nod to amendment of electricity suppliers law

Minister of Trade and Industry, Neo Moroka has pleaded with his colleagues in government to consider updating laws that he said are far behind time and inhibiting economic growth.

He was commenting on a bill presented by Minister of Minerals Energy and Water Resources, Ponatshego Kedikilwe to amend the Electricity Supply Act to authorise the creation and licensing of independent producers and suppliers of electricity, and generally for taking measures conducive to the development and promotion of the electricity supply industry, and to provide for matters connected with or incidental thereto.
Moroka said that many government departments still operate with outdated laws hence the opening of doors to private power suppliers is a welcome step.

He said that the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) enjoys the monopoly of supplying electricity and their charges are very high since there are no competitors.  Moroka called on government to ensure that Batswana run the transport and retail businesses at the soon-to-be-established Mmamabula coal mining town.  He commended South Africa for agreeing to buy electricity from Botswana produced at Mmamabula.
MP for Gaborone West South, Robert Molefhabangwe called on government to keep an eye on how BPC does its business.  He said that electricity connection is very expensive and that people purchase transformers as syndicates only for them to be owned by the corporation later.
