More security agents charged with extra judicial killings

As the John Kalafatis case nears completion at the High Court, with judgement slated for June 1, more security agents charged with extra judicial killings are appearing in courts of law.

Lobatse High court Judge Zibani Makhwade will next month resume trial for four police officers facing a murder charge. The accused persons are: Modiredi Modise, 34, a local police officer based at Boatlaname Customary Court, Montshwari Ramatebele, 35, based at Thamaga Customary Court, Loeto Morwaagae, 34, of Kumakwane local police and Gontse Mangundu, 23, of Old Molepolole Police Camp.

The accused persons, who were attached to the Stock Theft Unit, are alleged to have murdered David Mongae on or about March 5, at or near Motswaiso and Gatalathuthwa turn-off in the Kweneng District, while investigating him for stock theft. They are alleged to have tortured Mongae to death during investigations.  The case comes before court on June 27, 28 and 30, then resumes on July 4 and August 1.  Meanwhile, Broadhurst magistrate Hauwa Nuru will on Thursday make a ruling on the committal proceedings against six police officers charged with murder of a Mahalapye man, Italy Setlaampoloka.
