FRANCISTOWN: After being declared the winner in the recent by-election at Monarch West, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillor, Godfrey Kaelo did not stay long to savour his victory.

He had to be rushed to hospital after the celebratory pushing and shoving took their toll on him.Kaelo clinched the by-election after beating Goitse Majumane of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and Thabani Peter of Botswana People's Party (BPP) last Saturday.By Monday morning, instead of being on cloud nine with unbridled euphoria, Kaelo, 50, was instead occupying a bed at Nyangabwe Referral Hospital (NRH).He was admitted at the hospital on Sunday morning, after he was said to have been attacked by appendicitis. Kaelo, who disclosed from his hospital bed that he has been on a waiting list to undergo an appendix surgery, reportedly fell ill as he was celebrating his triumph in the by-election. "He was diagnosed with appendicitis a long time ago and has been on the waiting list to undergo appendix surgery since the beginning of the year.

"It seems like the celebrations took their toll on him because he was constantly lifted and shoved by party revellers.  That is why and when he fell ill," alleged a BDP source who could not disclose his name because he was not given permission to speak on behalf of the party. The party secretary for Communications and International Relations Macdonald Peloetletse confirmed to Mmegi that Kaelo was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning but said that it had nothing to do with the weekend celebrations.  "This was a minor operation which he could have done two weeks back but chose to delay it until after the elections. This is because other candidates could have used it against him during the lead to the by-election," he said. Kaelo himself confirmed from his hospital bed that he has been admitted at the hospital in the early hours of Sunday for appendicitis and had undergone an appendix surgery by Monday afternoon.
