Beleaguered assistant minister of Education and Skills Development, Fidelis Molao has appeared before the Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) central committee, as nationwide outrage mounts over an alleged cover-up of a schoolgirl pregnancy.

A councillor in Molao’s Shashe West constituency, Kemmonye Amon, is alleged to have impregnated a schoolgirl in the area with subsequent leaks from Facebook purportedly showing the councillor and Molao discussing the cover-up.

Yesterday, BDP secretary general, Botsalo Ntuane told journalists that the central committee had summoned Molao to explain himself. Ntuane was mentioned as having been consulted in the alleged Facebook leaks. Ntuane said Molao had repeated his innocence before the central committee, saying the alleged Facebook conversation had never taken place and was the result of a hack. “Understandably he is disturbed by the situation and he has reported the matter to the police for an investigation as to who could be behind the fake account. The police are dealing with the matter and we hope the outcome of the investigation will be known soon,” Ntuane said.
