The Ministry of Education (MoE) ignored warnings to close schools before students went on the rampage last week.

School heads from the southern region which includes Gaborone, Tlokweng and Ramotswa issued the warning last week after a meeting in which they unanimously agreed that something must be done to avert danger.

They determined that there was a crisis and should the state of affairs continue, schools should be closed. They then held an emergency meeting with the Permanent Secretary (PS) Ministry of Education, Grace Muzila on May 6 to inform her of the situation. Minutes of the meeting indicate that the school heads told the PS there had been indiscipline and lawlessness in schools as the support staff was very thin on the ground.
