MoA is not getting rid of boluses - De Graaff

The Minister of Agriculture, Christian de Graaff, has dismissed recent media reports that the government was doing away with the bolus, a microchip used for individual identification of livestock.

Instead, government was currently looking at improving and replacing the old equipment it had had for 10 years with better equipment for inserting and reading data from the microchip that is placed either on the ear or in the stomach of animals, he said.

Briefing the media last week, Minister de Graaff said government was trying to copy Namibia's better equipment that may also be used to replace the identification data if the animal lost the chip placed on its ear. He said the three-year project that started in August last year was in its second year of implementation, noting that the project allowed for the purchase of 340 sets of field computers throughout the three years. So far, MoA had received a total of 210 computer sets.
