Mixed reactions to Bagopi's appointment

The president of the Botswana Manual Workers Union (BMWU), Johnson Motshwarakgole has welcomed the appointment of the former Deputy Police Commissioner, Ikwatlhaeng Bagopi, as the new Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs.

Bagopi joins his former boss, former Police Commissioner, Edwin Batshu, at the ministry. The unionist said despite the fact that the ministry is dominated by former police bosses, Bagopi is the right man for the job as he was patient and cooperative during the public service strike.

He argued that former police officers do not dominate the public service as much as ex-military men. Although his party does not have a position on the appointment yet, the Botswana Movement for Democracy's (BMD) Wynter Mmolotsi feels that the ministry should have filled the position internally. He argued that the latest development might de-motivate deserving officers at the ministry.
