MISA Botswana wishes to alert the nation on the detention of Mmegi newspaper Editor Ryder Gabathuse and senior reporter Innocent Selatlhwa by the Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DISS).

The arrests have been confirmed by the newspaper's lawyer Mr Dick Bayford. MISA Botswana has initiated an independent investigation on the matter and wishes to express its shock and concern regarding the detention of the two journalists. While MISA Botswana respects the importance of the work of the DISS and other state security agents, we wish to caution against abuse of office by these agents in that the circumstances of the arrests paint a picture of press freedom being trampled upon. MISA Botswana will update the nation as more information relating to the matter is put together. *Mr. Thomas Nkhoma is the MISA BOATSWANA -Chairman
