The director of Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Botswana, Phenyo Butale has resigned to join Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) in Johannesburg. Butale, a former Btv news editor told Mmegi that unlike MISA, FXI deals with media mitigation, content and litigation.

He said MISA Botswana has achieved many milestones like making the need for the proposed Freedom of Information Act a public issue. He said MISA Botswana engaged stakeholders including government to buttress the importance of the legislation for good governance, transparency and to fight social ills such as corruption.  In addition, MISA engaged in a media campaign to educate the public about the law and to dispel some of the myths peddled by opponents of the proposed legislation. Butale said that the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mokgweetsi Masisi, has promised to table a Freedom of Information bill in Parliament soon.He said MISA is waiting eagerly for the bill, though they are not happy because they have not been consulted to make an input in the draft. He stated that during his tenure at MISA, one major challenge he faced is the government's hostility to the media. He said that MISA has opted to call for entries for its awards because monitoring the work of journalists can be an expensive affair.
