The Ministry of Education has said that a majority of secondary school students have been exempt from paying fees after a review done last year.

The ministry's principal public relations officer, Nomsa Zuze said yesterday that after the review it is difficult to determine whether parents are paying school fees or not. "It is only a small number of students who are expected to pay the fees," Zuze said. She explained that parents who were exempt from paying are those earning from P500 to P1,200.

"Most of the parents fell in that bracket. If let us say 600 students in a school with a total of 800 students have been exempt, then we are looking at about 200 parents who are supposed to pay the fees," she said. She added that it is difficult to say parents are not paying.
