The Botswana government has decided to cut spending on student accommodation at Monarch University of South Africa after the detection of overpayment. Today, the Minister of Education Jacob Nkate is scheduled to go to Monash to get to the bottom of the matter. Nomsa Zuze, the spokesperson for the ministry said yesterday that she will give a briefing on the matter after the visit.

It is said the government realised at the end of last year that it has been paying R800 per student per month for accommodation over the R1,500 a month asking price. A directive was issued last year to contain the wastage and make the students pay the extra R800 from their allowances.

Meanwhile, the students now say the university wants them to pay an extra R7,500 per term over and above the R7,500 paid by the government for accommodation.
They said they need an extra 7,500 because rentals have been hiked by the university. The students get R3,020 a month in allowances from government.
