Ministry reveals problems with paying student allowances

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Golekanye Setume has revealed that every year, they face a challenge of paying allowances of government-sponsored college students because of logistical problems.

He said the ministry waits for confirmation of registration from the colleges before opening accounts for new students. "This is because we do not want to pay the wrong students or those who do not exist," Setume said. He said he was in the dark about continuing students who have not been paid to date. "It might have been due to late submission of the registration list from the institutions but they are currently being paid.

Our major concern is on the new students who need new accounts to be opened for them," he said. Setume added that the allowances were delayed by the slow processing of the sponsorship letters of the new students, which were done manually.
