Ministry ponders winter school closure

The Ministry of Education and Skills Development has revisited the possibility of closing public schools in winter.

Speaking in an interview with Mmegi over the weekend, the public relations officer Godfrey Kalanke said that the issue was still at the initial stages. He said the main objective was to consider how vacations would be rationalised so the syllabus could be completed by end of the year.

Kalanke stated that the stakeholders have been given an assignment to thrash out details with teachers' organisations being taken on board. "They will be looking at different models of how the schools should be closed. Parents will also be consulted for their input," Kalanke said.  He further revealed that a committee has been formed comprising the Botswana Examinations Council, Department of Teacher Training and Development, Departments of primary, secondary and curriculum development to deal with the issue. "It is still an idea as we speak.
