Ministry move too costly, inquiry told

The Botswana Sectors of Educators' Trade Union (BOSETU) has told the Committee of Inquiry on 2010 Examinations that the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) and the Ministry of Education and Skills Developments' decision to abandon talks on invigilation was a massive blow.

BOSETU secretary general, Tobokani Rari told the committee at a meeting held in Parliament yesterday that not only did the engagement of external invigilators compromise the quality of last year's examinations but also was an expensive route.

"Financially, this decision cannot be justified as it is proving to be exorbitant. BEC chose to go the expensive way, while there was a cheaper option had the negotiations continued," Rari told the inquiry chaired by Keetla Masogo.
