Ministry acts to jack up adult education

The Ministry of Education has recruited 12 University of Botswana (UB) graduate teachers to pioneer the newly introduced Adult Basic Education Programme (ABEP).

Launching the orientation for the newly recruited teachers held at the Big Five Lodge in Mogoditshane on Wednesday, Assistant Education Minister Peter Siele explained that the ministry had adopted this strategy "to deliver the new programme to the required level of quality". He stated that since there were many unemployed graduates from various teacher training institutions, it was decided that they be engaged and re-trained as adult learning facilitators.

Siele indicated that this was found to be a cost- effective way of achieving MoE's objectives because the facilitators would require only short-term orientation of their qualifications. "An added advantage of this approach is that it reduces the number of unemployed graduates in Botswana," he said.
