Minister Matambo charged

The Minister of Finance and Development Planning Kenneth Matambo has been officially charged with one count of corruption, contrary to section 31 (1) as read with section 36 of the Corruption and Economic Crime Act.

Matambo and his predecessor, the late Baledzi Gaolathe, have been among only few people of high positions who have enjoyed the enviable reputation of "Mr Clean."

He has confirmed to Mmegi that he has been served with a charge and that he will appear for mention on May 31 at the Gaborone Village Magistrates Court. Particulars of the offence are that "between July 1, 2005 and September 30, 2005, in Gaborone, being a public officer, Managing Director of Botswana Development Corporation, a public body, whilst he had an indirect interest in a company called Tuwana Construction, in that the said company during the period in question, was constructing a house on Plot 2433, Extension 9, Gaborone, which plot belonged to prosperity Holdings PTY lTD, a company owned wholly by him and his wife, at a time when BDC proposed to deal with Tuwana Construction, knowingly failed to disclose to BDC the nature of such interest and participated in the proceedings of BDC corporation relating to such dealing, thereby acting corruptly," reads the charge sheet.
