"The schools shall remain closed until further notice. I had to take this measure to safeguard the security of students, staff and government property in schools," she said in a press release explaining that she closed the schools in accordance with the powers vested in her under Section 27 of the Education Act CAP. 58.01.

When the head of schools in the South East region met with the Permanent Secretary Grace Muzila last week, they advised her to declare a crisis and close the schools.  According to one school head in Gaborone, while Muzila supported this recommendation, she indicated that she did not know if the Minister of Education Venson-Moitoi would agree.
