Former Permanent Secretary, Elvidge Mhlauli has been put on his defence after Gaborone Village Chief Magistrate Lot Moroka ruled on Friday that he has a case to answer on charges of abuse of office and deponing a false affidavit. Mhlauli has been put on the dock over the allocation of land where the up-market Riverwalk Mall stands.

He is accused of abusing public office to award the Riverwalk land to Eddie Norman and submitting a false affidavit.

After the prosecution had called all its witnesses, the defence had hoped that Mhlauli would get a reprieve when they made an application for a no case to answer. Moroka put paid to all hope of an early acquittal when he ruled that Mhlauli has a case to answer on both counts. The magistrate said that the evidence led in court has clearly established a prima facie case against the ex-PS.
