When he left his house yesterday morning, Elvidge Mhlauli was driving his own beige Mercedes Benz to court. When the court adjourned in the afternoon, the former Permanent Secretary had lost his freedom. He was not even allowed to drive his own car.

He was now state property. His liberty was curtailed and he was driven under escort by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime to jail.

Gaborone Village Chief Magistrate Lot Moroka had found him guilty on two counts of abusing office by over-extending his authority to cause an allocation of a commercial plot at Riverwalk to Eddie Norman and thus prejudicing the rights of one Kadimo Oremeng. Mhlauli was found guilty on the charge of knowingly giving false information to a Commissioner of Oaths.
