Merafhe Urges Diplomats To Travel

The suffering of the people of Darfur in western Sudan and the conflict in Somalia are of particular concern to Botswana as a member of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Mompati Merafhe, told diplomats at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) last Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of President Festus Mogae, who is recuperating after undergoing a minor surgical procedure on his left shoulder, Merafhe said peace and security continued to be threatened, bringing untold suffering to millions of people across the African continent.

Botswana would "collectively with other members," continue to exercise her mandate to find peaceful and durable solutions to conflict situations ravaging the continent.
Merafhe was speaking at the annual diplomatic reception, which he described as "a symbol of goodwill and friendship" between Botswana and the numerous countries and international organisations represented here.
