Merafhe remains MP

"He continues to be a member of the BDP and Member of Parliament for Mahalapye West. As of now he has not indicated if he is stepping down from that position, until such a point that he does decide otherwise, for now we know that he will be MP for Mahalapye West and nothing has changed in that regard," Secretary General for Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Thabo Masalila said yesterday.

The VP is currently on leave and resting at his official residence in Gaborone. "He is in good health and good spirits and we had a long chat about politics, farming and life in general, and his decision to step down," Masalila said.Responding to complaints from senior party members who only learnt about the veteran cabinet member's retirement on radio, he said it was difficult to communicate to all the structures since the retirement was unexpected. "It was a short space in saying that 'I'm leaving at the end of this month', so we respect that, we have accepted it. We are still in shock but there was very little we could do to change that," he said. Masalila was confident that since the retirement was out of Merafhe's own volition he had discussed the matter with his supervisor President Ian Khama. Masalila dismissed suggestions that the VP's departure would destabilise the party.

Merafhe's departure continues to bring out positive reviews even from unexpected quarters. Botswana Movement for Democracy MP Wynter Mmolotsi, who has had a fractious relationship with the VP in Parliament, yesterday described Merafhe as a father figure who has contributed immensely to the growth of this country. "He has contributed during his time as Commander of Botswana Defence Force (BDF), and as Minister of Foreign Affairs. But he was clouded by the current government that only allows one man's voice to dominate the rest of the party," he said emphasising that Merafhe's loyalty to President Khama destroyed his integrity. "I enjoyed working with him and yes we clashed, but we are best of friends right now" Mmolotsi added
