Mephato arrest crime in Tswapong

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Drunken revellers in Ratholo had a rude awakening on Saturday when they were dispersed by the traditional vigilante squads (mephato) in a crime prevention strategy started in the village in January. The vigilante squad ordered all bars and drinking spots playing loud music to stop and those making noise to shut-up.

Ratholo chief Molefhe Mangadi said that they started mephato in January this year after the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Dikgakgamatso Seretse addressed the community about crime prevention and cluster policing. Prior to Seretse's address, the village had a neighbourhood watch programme though it did not conduct night patrols.

"After the minister addressed us, we embarked on mephato as a new strategy and everyone in the village was eager to engage in it. Majwaneng residents had started it last year and it was a challenge to us to start."
