Men have power over HIV spread

FRANCISTOWN: Men have the power to reduce HIV/AIDS. This is the message that emerged from the Francistown True Men conference held on Wednesday to sensitise men on care of the affected and infected. Francistown mayor, Buti Billy, took a swipe at men who still have a negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS related programmes like PMTCT and antiretroviral therapy.

"I am very disappointed that we gather every time to discuss these issues but men still continue to be involved in passion killings, alcohol abuse and HIV/AIDS numbers continue to increase.  We still have the power to curb all these problems because we are the heads of families and in instances like sex, we are in control of whether to use a condom or not," he said.

Billy cautioned that men should not just discuss and make resolutions that they do not commit to, as this could lead to a re-colonisation of the country because Batswana would have been wiped out by HIV/AIDS.  "Let's be responsible in our actions so that our children can one day take over the country while we are alive to guide them." Billy said that government spends a lot of money meant for development on HIV/AIDS programmes but people still continue to engage in unprotected sex. He added that Batswana have free male and female condoms but they still do not exercise any of the choices they have.
