Mediation as BOFEPUSU, DPSM fail to agree

Public sector unions have filed a dispute with the Commissioner of Labour after they failed to reach an agreement with the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) over salary increment.

According to Andrew Motsamai, secretary general of the Botswana Federation of Public Sector Union (BOFEPUSU), who is also President of the Botswana Public Employees' Union, they filed a dispute with the Commissioner of Labour on Monday and are waiting for a date to be set for the mediation hearing. He stated that their expectation is to have the dispute resolved by the Commissioner in 30 days, in accordance with the Trade Dispute Act as contained in the Public Service Act.

Motsamai revealed that an emergency meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the BOFEPUSU would be held today to work on the roadmap and agree on rules going forward. "We will inform our members where we are after agreeing, as the leadership, on certain rules of the strike. We want to exhaust all the procedures within the law so that they do not use the law against us in the future on any decision that we will take if mediation fails us," he said.
