Media participation crucial

With just a thousand days to deliver on Millennium Development Goals (MDG) commitments, the Ministry of Health (MoH) is worried that it is likely to have little to present unless the media assumes a crucial role of information dissemination.

Speaking at a Tuberculosis (TB) press conference at Vresta Lodge in Gaborone yesterday, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Shenaaz El Halabi, said that at the current rate of progress, it is clear that many of the countries hardest hit by TB, especially in the African region, are unlikely to meet MDG-related targets.

El Halabi said unless the media comes on board and closes the gap on information-sharing between MoH and the public, the ministry is likely to achieve very little. “Your daily interaction with the community puts you at a more privileged position to raise the necessary awareness on pertinent health issues such as TB/HIV, including drug resistant TB,” she said.
