Mbeki's resignation to take effect on Thursday

South Africa's ruling African National Congress has brought a motion in Parliament that South African President Thabo Mbeki's resignation will take effect on September 25. Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete has read out Mbeki's resignation letter to the National Assembly.

Parliament is likely to vote for an interim president, who is expected to be ANC Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on the same day. The Freedom Front Plus has objected to the ANC's motion. FF Plus MP Corne Mulder says that Mbeki must be given an opportunity to respond.
