Mayor preaches self-reliance

Francistown mayor, James Kgalajwe urged Batswana not to depend on other nations and the government for assistance during poorly attended Independence Day celebrations on Monday.

"Most of us are relying heavily on government handouts," he said. He stated that over-reliance on the government is suicidal when the state gets broke.

Kgalajwe said the agricultural sector, which used to be the mainstay of the economy is fast losing its significance because President Ian Khama's administration is enrolling people under the government food basket programme. "And Batswana are now abusing the programme by not willing to be innovative in order to be self-reliant," charged Kgalajwe.
