SELEBI-PHIKWE: Town Clerk Kutlwano Matenge says that the council plans to set up a customer services centre with a toll-free number to boost service delivery.

He said currently the community does not know where to get assistance. Matenge said the council would be paying the telephone bills and emphasized that the community has the right to know what the council is doing. The Town Clerk added that the Ministry of Local Government has approved this and every council will implement it. "We are here for the community and this is what my management should know." Speaking during a meeting the Selebi-Phikwe umbrella Village Development Committee (VDC) arranged with him, Matenge said it was high time public officers rolled their sleeves up.

"I am a changed person and any failures in previous councils will never deter me here. If I see something wrong I will address it immediately. Report any incompetence among public officers and I will deal with them." He said some public servants have been pursing different agendas, declaring: "That is enough, now it is time to work for this country." Matenge pledged to fight maladministration, which the VDC, as stakeholders and development partners, have always complained about within council offices. "Go didimala go sentse lefatshe. If you point out shortcomings some people think you are talking too much but I will never keep quiet." Matenge recalled that he was once accused of not wanting a certain councillor in Gaborone just because "I disapproved of some maladministration in council".
