President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi is set to embark on the long-awaited trip to South Africa (SA) tomorrow to visit the Mmamatlakala Bridge, where 45 Batswana pilgrims lost their lives.

According to SABC News, Masisi is expected to meet with SA President Cyril Ramaphosa and travel to Mokopane before heading to the accident site.

"President Ramaphosa alongside his counterpart from Botswana, Masisi, will on Thursday visit the bus accident that claimed 45 Batswana citizens. Ramaphosa and Masisi will kick off the day in Mokopane on Thursday where they will get a briefing before heading to the accident site," SABC reported.

The Botswana government has confirmed the trip through a statement.

"His Excellency Mokgweetsi Masisi will undertake a working visit to Limpopo Province, SA, on April 11, 2024," read the statement.

Masisi will be accompanied by First Lady Neo Masisi and other government officials.

The 45 Batswana pilgrims lost their lives after their bus overturned and fell off a bridge on March 28 while en route to Moria for the Easter holidays. SA authorities are currently engaged in the process of identifying the bodies, some of which were burnt beyond recognition, while the sole survivor, an eight-year-old child, returned home last week. It is reported that some of the bodies have already been buried.
