MASCOM donates to Botswana Predator Conservation Society

A representative from the Botswana Predator Conservation Society has expressed delight at the P25,000 cheque the organisation received from mobile telecommunications company Mascom.

The cheque was presented to BPCS Tuesday morning at a Mascom corporate social responsibility sponsorships presentation ceremony held in Gaborone.  Speaking to Mmegi in an interview after the presentation ceremony, Peter Dow said the money will go to the organisation's Coaching for Conservation (C4C) programme, which is run every year for standard five primary school kids in the greater Maun area.  The programme, whose core values are "respect yourself, respect each other and respect your environment", teaches children predator conservation through football.

"Kids love football, so you already have a captive audience, we merge the sport with the conservation by ensuring that the animal characteristics are sort of mental coaches to the kids.  For example, cheetahs are very fast, and good footballers need to be fast," Dow said. The C4C programme, in its eighth year now, also seeks to conserve Botswana's natural resources by using sport to engender self-respect in kids, and raise a generation of children who care about their environment.
