FRANCISTOWN: A 50-year-old Zimbabwean mechanic working for Mupane Gold Mine on Tuesday died while pumping a Load Haul Dump (LHD) loader tyre which later exploded.

Mupane general manager, Cedric Sam confirmed the incident in an interview with Mmegi. Indications are that the 50-year-old employee sustained fatal injuries when the tyre he was pumping exploded. “I cannot go into details about the incident, but I can certainly confirm that one of our mechanics died while inflating a tyre for one our LHD loaders. Investigations are still on-going.

So far, the police have been to the scene and we are waiting for officials from the department of mines to come and do their investigations,” Sam said late yesterday. Officials from the department of mine arrived in Francistown from Gaborone yesterday afternoon. They were expected to carry out investigations at the mine for the better part of today. Mupane gold mine is located in Northeastern Botswana 30km South East of Francistown. It is the country’s sole gold operation.
