President Ian Khama has been accused of dishonesty in his claims that like his predecessor Festus Mogae, he supports women empowerment.

Botswana Congress Party (BCP) Francistown South parliamentary candidate Vain Mamela said on Sunday that if Khama supported women, he would not have sacked them when he took power last year. Mamela was speaking at the launch of the Botswana Alliance Movement (BAM) and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) joint manifesto in Gaborone.

"Mogae empowered women like Moggie Mbaakanyi by putting her in the Education Ministry and Sheila Tlou (Health Minister) but when Khama took over, he dropped them from cabinet and put men, yet he now wants to turn around and say he supports women. This is not true," he said. Mamela said that the idea of increasing the number of Specially Elected MPs by the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) from four to eight under the guise of women empowerment is the party's strategy to boost its representation in Parliament. "As we are going to the general elections, the BDP has already reserved itself eight seats for its people in Parliament," he said.
