Male MPs fault debate on Children's Bill

The MP for Mahalapye East, Botlogile Tshireletso ran into trouble from male legislators on Friday during debate on the Children's Bill. The MP met stiff resistance from her male colleagues when she suggested that children born out of wedlock should know their biological fathers irrespective of the marital status of their mothers.

She lamented that many children have only known their biological fathers when they are over 25 years. She said that fathers have a tendency of associating with their illegitimate children only when they are intelligent.

She added that there is nothing wrong in mothers telling children about their biological fathers. Many male MPs opposed Tshireletso's contribution and on several occasions, she had to yield to Mogoditshane legislator, Patrick Masimolole, who showed a lot of interest in the bill. He demanded answers from Tshireletso on what should happen if the child is born outside marriage and the father is a family man.
