Malaysia students out on bail

A Malaysian magistrates' court on Monday released two Botswana female students who had been languishing in a Malaysian jail on bail pending trial.

The duo, who are still doing foundation courses at the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT), were remanded on June 23 for possession of drugs with two of their non-Botswana citizen male friends. Speaking to Mmegi yesterday, Education ministry's Public Relations Officer (PRO) Godfrey Kalanke said that the two students would appear for mention on August 28. He revealed that the lawyers representing them have charged them about RM 2500 (P5, 000), which has been paid by their institute as a loan.

"The Ministry of Education and Skills Development does not have any agreement with the students to pay their legal fees; so that will be an arrangement between them and their parents. It has been relayed to us that the school paid the fees as a loan which will have to be repaid," Kalanke said. He added that they have already met with the students' parents to brief them on the latest developments and their financial implications.
