Maikano targets 300 men for circumcision

FRANCISTOWN: Maikano Youth Wellness Organisation (MYWO) intends to mobilise 300 men for circumcision through its campaign dubbed 'Mine Workers Safe Male Circumcision Cycling Challenge'.

The campaign is expected to start on March 23. The cycling challenge is a 60km ride that will start at the Francistown College of Education (FCE) to Dumela Industrial Site and finish at the Francistown Club. "We decided to host the event in Francistown because the city is among the highest in HIV/AIDS prevalence rate. The city is also home to a sizeable number of miners who work in the mines located in the neighbouring villages. The miners are also among those who are mostly affected by HIV that is why we are targeting them, " Maikano chairperson Nkosi Bentu said at a press briefing at the Light and Courage Centre thisweek.

He said the initiative is part of the organisation's contribution towards the national long term goal of an HIV/AIDS free generation. So far, seven mines in the country, the police, the Botswana Defence Force, the Ministry of Health and local commercial banks have confirmed that they will take part in the one-day event.
