It has been weeks since the primary elections for the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in Mahalapye West took place but it is evident that it will take a long time for many of the youth in the area to come to terms with the reality that their preferred candidate lost the elections.

The seat fell vacant after then Member of Parliament (MP) and vice president Lt General Mompati Merafhe retired due to declining health. Moatshe Senai, who has been a councillor for Herero ward, failed in his bid to represent the ruling party in the next by-elections after losing to Gaborone attorney Bernard Bolele by 1,787 votes to 1, 024.

Most of the youth who talked to Mmegi over the Independent holidays in Mahalapye explained that they have nothing against Bolele but they have always worked closely with Senai on a number of issues, including the development of their lives thus establishing a cordial relationship with the man. But with his defeat the youth's hopes to have Senai as their next MP, have been shattered.
