LSB raises doubts over quality of judges

In a week that saw several judges appointed to the Court of Appeal (CoA) and the High Court, the chairperson of the Law Society of Botswana (LSB) Yvonne Chilume says the appointment of judges of the High Court, Industrial Court and CoA does not meet the test of independence of the Judiciary.

"In addition to the lack of transparency, the system produces judges that are not always able to perform to levels required to dispense of justice in a fair and quick manner," she said.

On the issue of delayed or non-delivery of judgements, Chilume said, the Judicial Case Management System implemented at the High Court has not addressed the fact that judgements are outstanding. She said no delivery of judgement should take up to months, years or even more after the conclusion of hearings.
